"Herb" Brings Tijuana Brass Sound To "Concerts at the Cove" in Alameda, Ca
The tenth annual series of free open-air Concerts at the Cove continues on July 13 with the musical group "Herb" recreating the sounds of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Crab Cove in West Alameda. Children's musician Hank Hooper will give a special performance for kids at 5:00 p.m.
"Herb" consists of an eight-piece band with members from the Clubfoot Orchestra, Grammy-winning Brave Combo, The Billy Nayer Show, Les Claypool, Casino Royale, Cirque du Soleil and Idiot Flesh. Since its inception in 1996, the group has performed with James Brown, Nancy Sinatra and Sergio Mendes and at the San Francisco Symphony's Black & White Ball and the San Francisco Giants' Candlestick (Monster) Park.
Hank Hooper enjoys introducing several musical genres to children with fun, memorable lyrics about robots, animals, baseball and bugs. It's been described as music for the whole family that won't drive the parents crazy.
The concerts -- presented by the West Alameda Business Association (WABA) in conjunction with the East Bay Regional Park District -- are held on the second Friday of each month during July and August on the lawn adjacent to the Crab Cove Visitors Center at 1252 McKay Street in Alameda.
Concerts at the Cove have become an Alameda summer tradition, with people spreading blankets on the lawn to picnic, listen to the music and dance when the spirit moves them. Rosenblum Cellars wine, Drake's beer and food from West Alameda restaurants will be on sale throughout the event. No outside alcohol is allowed in the park.
