Have you contacted your homeowners insurance agent lately?
I want to ask everyone, when was the last time you spoke with your homeowners insurance agent. Consider Lake Tahoe's Angora fire another reminder of sorts. While your home has appreciated in value over the last few years if your homeowner's insurance policy has not been kept up to date you may be sacrificing quite a bit considering the minimal amount for the added insurance coverage. Looking back on the Oakland Hills fire over a decade and a half ago in October of 1991 when over 3,000 homes were destroyed, many homeowners had not updated their policy in decades. It does not take long to figure out that to save a few hundred dollars annually on a policy insuring a home for three quarters of its value or less only to see it go up in flames was a big mistake. Oakland is a little different than Lake Tahoe granted, but the Angora fire in Tahoe is far from the 3,000 plus homes lost in Oakland. It can happen in areas least expected and has!
I have to ask you, have you made any upgrades in the past? Have you recently brought that old collection out of storage to reminisce about, celebrated a special event by buying some new jewelry, a camera, a video recorder? Add them up, you will be surprised. I have some old cameras, some hand made furniture, paintings and antiques stowed away. I took photos and have them addressed in my policy. I rest easy knowing that I am covered.
Do yourself a favor and give your insurance agent a call and get your policy updated today. Don't postpone it, an accident is just that, "something that was not planned" and can cost you more than the upgrades or additions to your lifestyle you are enjoying today. If you need a referral to an agent, I highly recommend Farmers Insurance. Roger Duke at 151 Callan Avenue in San Leandro he is my agent and as far as I am concerned there is nobody better informed and on top of the insurance market.
Thank You,
Chuck and Nancy Bianchi
